SPIRITUAL MATURITY

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. – 1 Corinthians 13:1-2

Spiritual maturity is not measured by spiritual gifts or spiritual knowledge. Rather, it can be measured by your love walk. You mature spiritually as you mature in love. When you received Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, a measure of the God-kind of love was shed abroad in your heart. You now have the love nature of God inside you. However, love is a fruit and it is your responsibility to let it blossom. It takes faith to walk in the God-kind of love. The God-kind of love is spiritual; it is of the heart, not reason or emotion. The God-kind of love is greater than your feelings and emotions. You cannot walk in God’s love if you always give in to your feelings (Romans 5:5, Galatians 5:22-23).

The flesh will resist all your attempts to walk in love. However, as you practice walking in love by faith, it will become increasingly easier to do. The God-kind of Love is sacrificial, not self-seeking. The opposite of the God-kind of love is selfishness. Does Grace permit us to do as we like? No! Rather, the love of Christ constrains/compels us. In all we do, we must be considerate and watch out for the total well-being of others (2 Corinthians 5:14-15, John 14:15).

Prayer: Almighty God, I am privileged to call You my Father. Thank You for Your love nature that is inside of me. Help me to let it blossom. I refuse to be selfish! Help me to practise walking in divine love daily, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
