Mark 4:39-41
Mark 5:1-20
“I’m on a mission of God’s glory and Jesus is in my boat.
No matter what storms life may throw, I refuse to fear or panic.
I will get to destination, for Jesus is able to calm every storm.
No matter the situation, I use my faith and victory will be mine”
Who told the disciples to cross over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee in Mark 4:35-41?
- It was Jesus Christ that instructed them!
- This implies that their journey to cross over on the sea was in the will of God
- When you are in the will of God, you ask for His grace
- When you are outside the will of God, you ask for His mercy
- 1 John 5:14-15, Hebrews 4:16
What was the purpose of crossing over to the other side of the lake in Mark 4:35-41?
- Mark 5:1-20 shows us that there was a man waiting to be delivered from the bondage of Satan (a legion of demons) and a whole region to be evangelized by the delivered man
Why was Jesus asleep on a pillow in the stern of the boat in Mark 4:35-41?
- He must have been physically tired!
- Jesus was a man, living in a fleshly body just like us
- He operated on earth as a man filled with the Word and the Spirit
- If you are full of the Word and the Spirit, you can operate like Jesus
- Acts 10:38, John 8:32, Acts 1:8
How big was the Sea of Galilee?
- It was a big lake with many surrounding towns
What was the source of the storm that hit the Sea of Galilee in Mark 4:35-41?
- Jesus had been preaching from a boat on that sea earlier in the day
- The sea (lake) of Galilee was calm all day and earlier that evening
- At least 4 of the disciples were experienced fishermen who were very familiar with that lake of Galilee and could predict its behaviour
- It was so calm that Jesus went (intentionally) to sleep on a pillow
- Could it be that the storm was a supernatural attack of the devil against their mission?
- 1 Peter 5:8-9
How did the disciples react to the storm?
- They panicked!
- They were very afraid
Why did the disciples wake Jesus up?
- They were angry that He was sleeping (at rest) during a great storm
- They were angry that He didn’t seem to care
- They were afraid that they were perishing
- They were frustrated that their efforts were not working
- Were they also blaming Him for the whole situation?
- Philippians 4:6-7
What did Jesus do to calm the storm?
- He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea: Peace, be still!
- He arose in faith and exercised spiritual authority by speaking to the storm
- Mark 11:22-25, Romans 10:9-10
What is the evidence that someone has no faith according to Mark 4:40-41?
- Someone who has no faith will be so fearful!
- When you panic, you are casting away your confidence in the Lord
- When you cast away your confidence, your faith is gone
- Hebrews 10:35-39
What could the disciples have done differently?
- They should have been confident that Jesus was in their boat!
- (Jesus has said that He will never leave you nor forsake you, Hebrews 13:5)
- (In response, you are to boldly say that the Lord is my helper, I will not fear, Hebrews 13:6)
- They should have remembered (put to mind) all the miracles that Jesus had done before
- They should have asked for His help in faith rather than panicking
- They should have persevered in faith with Jesus as their captain in battle
- Hebrews 10:35-39
