James 4:4-6
2 Timothy 3:1-5
1 Timothy 6:6-10
What is the love of money?
- Money is not evil. We need money for the good things of life. We spend most of our waking time in working for money. However, the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, 1 Timothy 6:10
- The love of money is valuing money (and material things) more than God (and spiritual things)
- The love of money is reflected in not giving enough time/energy for the things of God, not honouring God’s righteousness in the pursuit of money, not regularly paying your tithes (10% of all your income) to the Church of God (to support the work of ministry) and not giving generously to the things that honour God (including helping others in need)
How can I overcome the love of money?
- Put God first in every aspect of your life (Thus will help you avoid the idolatry and immorality involved with money), Matthew 6:24
- Honour God with your money through regular tithing and generous giving. Generous giving starts with the regular tithe (10% of all your income) that you pay to the Church (which is the Body of Christ), Proverbs 3:9-10
- Give to help others in need, Proverbs 11:24-25
- Make time for God and the things of God (pursue godliness in word, thought and deed), 1 Timothy 6:11
- The love of money is idolatry and idolatry always leads to immorality (i.e. the breaking of God’s laws).
How can a person achieve godly contentment according to 1 Timothy 6:6-10?
- Generous-giving (of time, money and energy)
- For-giving (and letting go of offences)
- Thanks-giving (and having an attitude of gratitude)
- Godly contentment can only be achieved by living by faith, walking in love and persevering in hope, 1 Thessalonians 1:3
